In-kind donations: when the need isn’t money

A youth program needs a van more than it needs a check. A classroom needs books, not a budget line. On GrantTitan, materials, equipment, and volunteer needs are first-class listings that funders browse directly — posted by the same verified profiles that apply for grants.

Three kinds of need, one board

Every posting on the needs board is one of three kinds. Money needs state an amount and what it is for. Things needs name the materials or equipment — and for a classroom, they break down into itemized line items with quantities and prices, so the total is a sum of real objects. People needs ask for volunteers and skilled help, with the roles stated plainly. A funder browsing the board can filter by kind, topic, and place, and can respond to a posting directly: offer support, arrange the in-kind gift, or invite the poster to apply to a grant that fits the need.

Because every poster holds a verified profile — a nonprofit checked against the IRS database and Candid, a teacher attached to a verified school record — a funder meeting a need from the board is dealing with an organization whose identity was confirmed before the posting went up, not with an anonymous request.

How an in-kind gift moves

The poster chooses who can see each need: funders across the platform, or only funders they apply to. When a funder offers support on a materials need, the arrangement is recorded on the platform — what was offered, by whom, and what happens next — and follow-through is tracked with the same check-in tasks used after a cash award: a receipt or a photo of the materials in use, and a short thank-you note. For classroom materials, money a funder contributes toward a posting is paid to the school, never to a teacher personally, and photos show the materials — never identifiable students.

GrantTitan does not run a warehouse or a shipping operation: the platform records the need, the offer, and the proof of arrival. The gift itself moves between the funder and the organization, with the record keeping both sides honest about what was promised and what showed up.

Why post needs instead of only applying?

Applications wait for a funder’s calendar: a round opens, a deadline passes, a decision lands months later. A posted need works the other way around — it is visible the day it is posted, to every funder whose giving matches it, including funders whose grants you have never heard of. And a need that starts as a posting often becomes a grant application: a funder who meets a small need today can invite the same verified organization into a larger round tomorrow, with the profile, documents, and history already on record.

Posting a need costs the same as everything else a seeker does on GrantTitan: $0. No fee to post, no percentage taken from a cash award, and nothing charged when an in-kind gift is arranged. Funders pay the subscriptions; see pricing. If your need is money through a formal round, start with grants for nonprofits or classroom funding for teachers.

Trust, verification & security

GrantTitan’s credential is not a badge we bought — it is a record you can read. Every verified profile names the source it was checked against and the date it was checked. This is the short version; the full page explains every rule.

Verified from named sources

  • Checks run automatically against the IRS tax-exempt organization database, Candid, verified school-system records, and the organization’s email domain — and fail closed, with the plain reason, if they cannot pass.

Security, in plain words

  • Multi-factor authentication, role-based access, encryption in transit and at rest, and a full audit log of who saw what.

Money & students

  • Seekers pay $0, and no student names, photos, grades, or records appear anywhere on the platform.
Applying and verifying are always free. GrantTitan never charges a fee to release funds, and will never ask for gift cards, wire transfers, or your password by email. If someone asks you for any of those, it is not us.

On certifications, plainly: we are building our controls toward SOC 2 Type II. GrantTitan is not SOC 2 certified, and we will not claim to be until an independent audit is complete.

Proof, not promises

Advance-fee grant scams dress up in borrowed badges. GrantTitan displays no certification logos at all — only claims you can check yourself, in one click, at the source. Our seal appears only where a check has actually run — and every check names its source.

IRS records

Nonprofit status is checked against IRS Tax Exempt Organization records.

Payments

Payments are processed by Stripe. GrantTitan never holds grant funds and never sees or stores card numbers.

Schools & privacy

No student names, photos, or records — anywhere, by design. We are ready to sign the National Data Privacy Agreement (NDPA) with any district.

What we hold — and what we don’t

Every certification we’ve earned, and the ones still in progress, are listed on our Trust & Security page. We claim only what we hold.
